Sometimes the smallest details in a home will add the extra sparkle or touch of sophistication. This could include anything from light fixtures to door knobs to baseboards. In this case, I am going to talk about baseboards, when they should be replaces and in what order they should be dealt with in relation to flooring.
For the extra glam that you may be looking for in your home, I would recommend replacing small, old baseboards with a new detailed baseboard at least three inches tall. The taller baseboards can give even the blandest home a touch of class and grandeur. I would also recommend going with a baseboard that has details with additional profile grooves to add character. If you have the small bull nose baseboards then I would seriously reconsider replacing them with a nicer trim, you will not regret it. If you're in Arizona, flooring installation is my business so check with me and I'll help you out.
The next question pertaining to baseboards is in what order would I put them in if I am also replacing the flooring. Well, that is a good question. If you are installing hard flooring such as tile, wood or laminate, I would recommend replacing the baseboards after the floor has been installed. This will eliminate the possibility of getting glue or grout on the baseboards and also keep them from getting banged up in the install of the flooring materials. If you are installing carpet on the other hand, I would then recommend you to install the baseboards first then the carpet. The reason for this is if you install the baseboards after, you could put them too close to the carpet and tack strip which would make it very difficult to replace the carpet at a later time.
If you plan on keeping your baseboards that you currently have but would like to replace the flooring, don't bank on it. If it is carpet then you will be okay. However if you plan to remove the baseboards to install tile or something else, the baseboards most likely won't last the recycle. So if you can't do the job with them on, go on and get started on picking out new baseboards.
