If you have been considering home schooling, you need to consider the pros and cons. If you are raising kids alone and trying to support your family too, home schooling might be too hard - even if you manage to work out of your home. On the other hand, if you are solely a stay at home mom or dad and your spouse is fully on board, home schooling can be great.
On the plus side, home schooling is a great way to have a personal hand in your childs education, and build stronger parent to child bonds. You can also have the freedom to travel, and plan many extracurricular activities that would otherwise be impossible.
There are many great curriculums out there, as well as parenting blogs run by others who home school, so you can get help and advice. You can often join a local home schooling association and hang out with other moms and dads who feel the same way as you do.
Also, if you disagree with something the schools teach you can skip that part and teach according to your own beliefs. This is important to many home schooling families who have strict religious beliefs and dont want their children taught about sex or evolution.
On the minus side is the fact that many parents who are trying to home school dont have the patience or experience for certain subjects. Fortunately, many home school groups will trade off and let the parents take turns teaching classes in their fields - an accountant might help with math, or a journalist could assist with English.
Another worry is that kids who are isolated can become lonely and have poor social skills due to not being around other kids their own age. Lots of team or group activities outside the home can help, here. Just sign them up for a church sponsored sports team, or find classes in drama, dance or music to help them grow.
If you live in a state that regulates private schools, you may be asked to turn in test results on a regular basis so they can see that your kids are being well educated. Whatever you decide, make sure your kids continue to grow in learning and remain happy, healthy and well adjusted!
