For starters, why does a newly christening person have 3 godparents? Traditionally, a boy will have 2 god-fathers, while a girl will have 2 god-mothers. Both will have a godparents of the opposite gender too. It is believed this is because they godparent of the same gender will understand the child better and offer specific advice.

The traditional role of godparents has it's roots in the early history of the Christian church. Because fresh converts to Christianity then would not have usually have birth parents as Christians, the church would see to it that they got godparents. With these new mentors, they new church member could grow as a Christian - hence the name godparents.

Nowadays, many people view godparents as sort of a guardian of the child. While it can be a symbolic role, to actually take charge of the child should the birth parents become incapacitated or deceased it needs to be put in a legal document like your will or testament.

Can non-religious people still have godparents, too? Of course! The concepts of mentorship and advice are good things for any young person. This is why many non-religious families still appoint a set of godparents for their child.

Close family friends are often chosen, because the birth parents can trust them and know their characters. Even with or without the religious undertones, the godparents can guide the child as he or she grows and truly care about his or her life.
